Listed assignments submitted after midnight 5-11-12 will not be considered for a grade.

NOTE: Many of the downloadable files for these assignments are TIF files. In some cases they're available in the lessons as downloadable links. Some folks will have trouble with QuickTime intercepting the links and then preventing the download. QuickTime is Malware! If you install iTunes on your computer Apple forces QuickTime on you. QuickTime then intercepts media files and displays them. When you try to download the file Apple pops up a message telling you to purchase QuickTime Pro to acquire that function. This is basically an extortion scheme by Apple. What to do: right click (WIN) or Ctrl click (MAC) on the link image and select "Save Link" from the menu that pops up. Don't select "Save Image" or you'll get the screen JPG file.

  • Assignment 1: The following five photos are straight from P&S cameras as the camera image processors delivered them. The only change I made to them was to size them down for faster download. Read through lesson 3 carefully and then download these photos and correct them for tone response. Take a shot at color correction as well, but grading of this assignment will be weighted to tone correction.

Size the finished photos to a width or height of 1024 pixels, and save them as high quality JPEGs. Name the files asgn1a_"your name".jpg and post them to the forum or email them to me as attachments (50 points).

  • Assignment 2: Here's five more photographs for you to correct. Adjust them for tone as you did in the assignment 1 photos. Then read Lesson 4 Chapter 2 very carefully and use either Photoshop's Lens Correction dialog or the Edit/Transform functions and correct these photos for distortion. If you can manage to also make appropriate color corrections to some of these I'll consider giving you some extra credit. Some of these are tough and you can count on doing them over a couple times before you get them right. Yell if you need some help.

Size the finished photos to a width or height of 1024 pixels, and save them as high quality JPEGs. Name the files asgn2a_"your name".jpg and post them to the forum or email them to me as attachments (75 points).

  • Assignment 3: Time for an easy one: Download the file victorian.tif from Lesson 4 Chapter 1. Spot the photo. Size your finished work to a height of 1024 pixels, and save it as a high quality JPEG. Name the file asgn3_"your name".jpg and post it to the forum or email it to me as an attachment. If you would prefer to spot one of your own scans let me know -- I need to see the scan first. (25 points)

  • Assignment 4:More practice with the clone and healing brush tools: Here's three files for you to work on. The healing brush is a good choice, but remember to switch into Repalce mode along edges.

    • floodplain: Remove the dead tree.
    • hill_yard: Remove the utility wires and their shadows.
    • dancer: Remove Octavio -- guy in the white shirt behind the dancer.

Size your finished work to a width of 1024 pixels, and save it as a high quality JPEG. Name the files asgn4_"your name".jpg and post them to the forum or email it to me as attachments. (60 points)

  • NOTE: Assignment 5 follows. It's hard and you're going to have trouble with it. Make your best effort and turn it in and I'll help you make it better. The assignments are going to get more difficult now. Don't think of them as all or nothing one-shot projects. We're going to learn now as we work and that means making multiple attempts and progressive improvements. Expect me to tell you to try again. This is OK. We learn best from difficult challenges. There's no penalty in this class for trying again until we get it right.

  • Assignment 5: Download the file wareagle.tif. This is an old scan from a cheap scanner; it's a mess. This is a roll up your sleeves repair job of a file that has been severely damaged. In practice we should never allow files like this to come into existence. However, if you have to work on other peoples photos as an operator you'll get asked to repair much worse than this. Tone adjust, color correct and distortion adjust the photo. Remove the street light sticking out from the left side of the building. See what you can make out of it. Size your finished work to a width of 1024 pixels, and save it as a high quality JPEG. Name the file asgn5_"your name".jpg and post it to the forum or email it to me as an attachment. (65 points)

  • Assignment 6: Download the file washtubs.tif. The green garden hose is distracting. Change it's color to something dark and less saturated. There's too much pink in the flowers. Make the petunias blue but leave the red flowers alone. And get rid of that turned over license plate on the floor lower right. Size your finished work to a width of 1024 pixels, and save it as a high quality JPEG. Name the file asgn6_"your name".jpg and post it to the forum or email it to me as an attachment. (30 points) NOTE: Click on the photo for help.

  • Assignment 7: Downlaod the file milos.tif from Lesson 6 Chapter 4. Milo's is a very Italian bistro (bocce ball court in the back) in an Italian neighborhood. The colors of the Italian flag are red, white and green which explains the overall color scheme of this photo. Convert the photo to black & white so that the red and green squares of the lamppost banner, Milo's awning (side lit in full sun) and the red painted bricks on the building under the sign Milo's Bocce Garden are all the same shade of grey. Size your finished work to a width of 1024 pixels, and save it as a high quality JPEG. Name the file asgn7_"your name".jpg and post it to the forum or email it to me as an attachment. (25 points).

  • EXAM: Here it is. It's not due till the end of the semester so take your time: EXAM Remove the wrong answers and email it back to me. (100 points)

  • Assignment 8: Same file as assignment 7 above. This time create two black & white versions of the photo. Make them identical except for the banner on the lamppost. In the first version make the red square darker than the green square and in the second version do the reverse. No cutting and pasting allowed -- use the Channel Mixer. Size your finished work to a width of 1024 pixels, and save it as a high quality JPEG. Name the files asgn8a_"your name".jpg/asgn8b_"your name".jpg and post them to the forum or email them to me as attachments. (35 points).

  • Assignment 9: Download the file cancer_ally.tif. That's what the camera captured. Convert the photo into a seriously awesome black & white image. Here's my effort: link. Size your finished work to a width of 1024 pixels, and save it as a high quality JPEG. Name the file asgn9_"your name".jpg and post it to the forum or email it to me as an attachment. (25 points)

  • Assignment 10: Here's an easy one. Download the file apples.tif. Use the history brush and blending modes to make the apples "pop." Make the colors more vivid and punch the contrast. Here's my version: link. I used the Overlay blending mode and the Multiply blending mode (selectively) at 60% opacity. Size your finished work to a width of 1024 pixels, and save it as a high quality JPEG. Name the file asgn10_"your name".jpg and post it to the forum or email it to me as an attachment. (30 points)

  • Assignment 11: This is sort of a free one. The only free one! This is your only chance in this course to use special effects filters. Select one of your own photos and filter it to produce a non-photographic image. Have fun and don't attempt anything similar with the assignments that follow. Size your image to a width/height of 1024 pixels, and save it as high quality JPEG. Name the file asgn11_"your name".jpg and post it to the forum or email it to me as an attachment. (25 points)

  • Assignment 12: Download two files: fishmrkt.tif and amishbgy.tif. Put the horse and buggy on the road in front of Downs' Fish Market. Remove the horse's tether so he doesn't look tied. Refer to lesson 10, chapter 1 for assistance. Size your finished work to a width of 1024 pixels, and save it as a high quality JPEG. Name the file asgn12_"your name".jpg and post it to the forum or email it to me as an attachment. (80 points)

  • Assignment 13: Download the file fishing.tif. Hand color the photo. (I'd do one for you as an example, but I don't want to influence your choice of colors.) Refer to lesson 13 for instructions. Size your finished work to a width of 1024 pixels, and save it as a high quality JPEG. Name the file asgn13_"your name".jpg and post it to the forum or email it to me as an attachment. (40 points)

  • Assignment 14: It would be remiss for me to allow this course to finish without working through at least one exercise with you where you begin by processing RAW files. It's a big download but here are three RAW (DNG) files for you. Right click the links and select Save Link As from the popup menu.

When you attempt to open .DNG files Adobe Camera RAW (ACR) will open first. Head straight for the line of blue text at the bottom of the ACR window and click there. Set the color space to sRGB and the bit depth to 8 bit. Then, watching the histogram display and the image, use the Exposure, Recovery, Fill, Black and Contrast adjustments to prep the image. Click Open and the photo will transfer to Photoshop where you can continue to process it. Here's my versions of these three images. See how close you can match them:

Size your finished photos to a width of 1024 pixels, and save them as high quality JPEGs. Name the files asgn14xx_"your name".jpg and post it to the forum or email them to me as an attachment. (70 points)

  • Assignment 15: OK, this assignment is special. I've had years to collect the worst examples of photo disasters from bad scans to camera screw-ups to user error to all of the above. These photos are beyond redemption and I know they're beyond your skill level at this time. I'm posting this along with the last three other assignments with four weeks left to complete the semester -- we have time. Get everything else finished and turned in first. Then I want you to take a crack at these and see what you can do to improve them. Apply what you've learned.

Size your finished photos to a width of 1024 pixels, and save them as high quality JPEGs. Name the files asgn15xx_"your name".jpg and post it to the forum or email them to me as an attachment. (50 points for making an honest effort and extra credit if you impress me.)

  • Assignment 16: I want to see your photos. Select three of your favorite photos and send me both your original (scan or camera JPEG) and processed final image. Size each image to a width/height of 1024 pixels, and save them as high quality JPEGs. Name the files asgn16xx_"your name".jpg. Post them to the forum or email them to me as attachments. (40 points)

  • That's all folks!
